LAMINATE
Pergo of Sweden invented wood laminates over 20 years ago. Today many manufacturers produce these products and they are all very similar. Popular brands are Columbia, Mohawk and Wilsonart.
Laminate floors are hard and durable like countertops. They are scratch, scuff and even burn resistant. Most laminates are made in wood grain looks but many other visuals are popular such as stone and ceramic tile. All have warranties when professionally installed. All can "float" on top of existing concrete, hardwood, vinyl, even on plywood floors. However, the substrate must be smooth for a good installation. The laminate lays loose on the floor and is glued or snapped together. A gap around the perimeter is required for expansion. All installations require a sound-reducing foam pad underneath and a perimeter wall base to complete the job. Additional silicone around the perimeter of the glued together laminate floor makes it more water resistant for kitchens and bathrooms.
Some laminate installations can be handled by a skilled do-it-yourselfer. For the difficult jobs a professional is a must.
Laminates are less expensive than real wood or ceramic but are more expensive than carpet and sheet vinyl .
Maintenance is as easy as a dry mop. Wipe up liquid spills with paper towels or sponge.
Wood laminate is not indestructible. It can be nicked or gouged by sharp objects. This condition can be repaired.
Subfloor is an important element in hard surface installation of vinyl, ceramic, hardwood, and wood laminates. Imperfections in the substrate can telegraph through to the new floor and result in unsightly bumps and ridges. Most installations require subfloor or floor preparation. The more you spend on subfloor and preparation the better the finished job will look.
